CHICAGO — If indeed LeBron James decides to leave Cleveland, fans in Chicago would certainly hail The King. They certainly let out enough cheers along with those oohs and aahs as he soared around the United Center on Friday night.

James became the youngest player to score 15,000 career points, breaking Kobe Bryant’s mark by more than two years, and the Cavaliers pulled away to beat the Bulls 92-85 for their 12th win in 13 games.

Breaking that record, James said, was “very humbling” and the result of all the time he spends honing his game.

“I was born with a God-given gift,” he said. “I take full advantage of it by being able to do what I do on the basketball court. Hopefully, I can continue to stay healthy, and hopefully, I’ll continue to break records.”

James scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, giving him 15,026 in his career, and had 11 rebounds. He scored seven in a row late in the game as Cleveland increased its lead to 10, sending the Bulls to their 10th straight loss.

James reached the milestone at 25 years, 79 days, and he did it in his 540th game. Bryant was 27 years, 136 days and playing his 657th game, according to STATS LLC, when he did it for the Los Angeles Lakers.

“There’s not a milestone that I think he’s going to attain that would shock me at all,” coach Mike Brown said.

The question is: Whose uniform will he be wearing when he reaches them? James, who can opt out of his contract after the season, would be the top attraction in a star-studded free-agent class if he decides to leave, and the Bulls will have the salary-cap room to offer a maximum deal.

Saab’s near-death experience has left it with just 500 cars for sale in showrooms across the United States, a figure the company wants to boost in coming years, CEO Jan Ake Jonsson said Tuesday.

"That number should probably be 5,000," Jonsson said at the Geneva Auto Show, where he appeared with the CEO of the Dutch automaker Spyker which in December took over Saab and gave it a new lease on life.

General Motors Corp. sold Saab Automobile AB to Spyker Cars NV for $74 million in cash plus $326 million worth of preferred shares in Saab. The deal was completed last month.

Saab sold just 39,000 cars globally last year, down from 94,000 a year earlier as the loss-making company decided to take nearly 20,000 units out of worldwide inventory last year, Jonsson said. The automaker plans to produce 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles this year, about two-thirds of those the Saab 9-3 compact executive car, and aims to reach levels of 120,000 by 2012, when it rolls out the new 9-3.

Jonsson said Saab would soon restart production and expected to ship the first units to the United States "in a couple of weeks." Saab is taking over its dealers from GM, so its distribution channels remain "intact," he said.

Jonsson said Saab doesn’t have the marketing budget for big full-page newspaper ads to win back customers and to get out the word that Saab is revving back up. Instead, it is counting on reaching out to its loyal consumers through the Internet.

"I think it is important to remember we have a fantastic customer base, a customer base that is so loyal, with such an enormous attachment to the brand. That is unique in the auto industry," Jonsson said.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller dismissed criticism that the Dutch specialty automaker had bought a problem that no one wanted to take on. It wasn’t that long ago that the Ford Explorer was one of the best-selling vehicles in North America.

Since its introduction in 1990, more than five million have moved off dealers’ lots, and were it not for changing consumer tastes – not to mention that unfortunate rollover imbroglio involving Firestone tires – no doubt it would still be a best seller.

True, it’s been getting bigger and more upscale over the years, and is now more of a full-size than mid-size SUV, but the Explorer has always featured an appealing blend of comfort, utility and driveability. In a nutshell, it’s easy to get along with.

In 2006, there were three versions: entry-level XLT, upscale Eddie Bauer and top-of-the-line Limited, plus the Sport Trac pickup.

There was also a new optional 4.6-litre V-8 engine, a powerplant widely used throughout Ford’s lineup and in the Explorer, it developed 292 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm. These numbers were up substantially from 2005, and this engine featured three valves per cylinder, giving it increased fuel economy and lower emissions. There were two transmission choices: five- or six-speed automatic, and the base engine was a 4.0-litre V-6.

Fuel economy was not great, but Ford said the Explorer met the strict California Light Emissions Vehicle standards, which are the toughest in North America.

But what made it such a hit with city slickers, suburbanites and country folk alike was the attention Ford paid to this market. Ford knew its customers as well as anybody and the Explorer could be ordered with all kinds of modcons.

You could get a 10-way power drivers seat, 50-50-split/folding third-row seat, fold-flat second-row seats, power sunroof, six-disc CD player, power-adjustable pedals and DVD-based navi system.

An 18-year-old Kansas City man caught this week with drugs and a gun didn’t make many excuses when questioned by police.

According to an affidavit filed Thursday in federal court:

Police pulled over a car Anthony L. Robinson was riding in Tuesday at Thompson and Bales avenues, when a warrant linked to the license plate.

Officers found a semi-automatic handgun concealed in a bag, marijuana in Robinson’s jacket pocket and more than 13 grams of crack-cocaine in his pants.

When detectives interviewed him the next day, Robinson explained everything:

He was headed to buy a cigar because he was rolling a blunt to get high, which he does every day.

He bought the gun a couple days earlier for $30 and put it in the bag to hide it from police. But he said there were no problems with the gun because it wasn’t stolen and it “had no bodies on it.”

The crack? “It’s mine and that’s how I roll 24/7.”

If officers let him go, he said, he’d be out doing the same thing.

Robinson was charged with possessing crack with the intent to sell and illegally possessing a firearm.

He also was charged in Jackson County circuit court with drug trafficking, unlawful use of a cheap flight Hobart to Albury weapon and possession of marijuana.

Windows Mobile is dead (sort of). Samsung will be Australia’s No.1 mobile phone company by the end of the year and have its own operating system in the market. Sony Ericsson will be building mostly Google Android-based phones in 2010. And Intel and Nokia have become bedfellows, jointly announcing a new Linux-based operating system for mobile devices called MeeGo. How quickly things change in a week in the tech industry.

Social networking is driving a reinvention of the smartphone category. No longer will these superphones be simply regarded as work tools for professionals or ubergeeks. Samsung’s new Bada operating system is designed to combine entertainment and social-networking features alongside the more conventional productivity applications. The idea is you have one phone for work and pleasure but without looking like you’ve given up entirely on the concept of work-life balance.

Samsung isn’t alone in that approach. Microsoft, best known for its business approach to mobiles, is going down a similar path with its make-or-break Windows Phone software. We look at what the major players are up to and how they’ll change the way you use your phone.

The Korean electronics giant is bullish about its mobile ambitions. It aims to overtake Nokia as the No. 1 mobile company in Australia before the year is out.

”Being No. 1 in volume is our objective and we believe it’s achievable,” says the head of marketing telecommunications at Samsung Electronics Australia, Max Bonpain. But he adds its goal is a marginally more modest No.2 in the smartphone category.

Samsung will also have its own mobile operating system in Australia by mid-year, in the form of a shiny new multimedia phone called Wave. The new OS, Bada, is an open source project in the same vein as Google’s Android.

Audi’s Quattro system is 30 this year, introduced on the Ur-Quattro at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show. To celebrate, Audi has a full year of activities planned, including a special exhibition at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt, a place at the Techno Classica in Essen, and Audi Tradition hauling momentous examples of Quattro to shows around Europe.

It’s interesting to ponder where Audi would have gone without Quattro. In America the tech and halo associations that emanated from the marque’s Group B rally eating monsters helped it go from being perceived as a maker of really nice VWs to a luxury line with a unique, finessed brawn.
